MSN Chat with Aaron Lewis

July 25, 2001 @ 6:00pm EST

DishDiva says: Aaron, let's get started.

DishDiva says: We are with you backstage?

Staind_Live says: Yep! We're in Jersey Shore.

DishDiva says: Great place to be in the summer!

Staind_Live says: Ok, (laughs) there's no swimming signs here because I think hazerdous waste washes up on the shore. (laughs)

YourExcessBaggage in Onstage1 asks: What's your favourite band memory?

Staind_Live says: You know, something that will stick in my mind forever was standing in Korn for a sound check.

°†ê§†«°™ in Onstage1 asks: What is the name of the Hidden song on Dysfunction?

Staind_Live says: "Excess Baggage."

InsanelyPsycho in Onstage5 asks: What was it like to hear your own voice on a CD for the first time?

Staind_Live says: Weird, it's still weird.

Staind_Live says: Especially to hear myself on the radio.

Guest_violent7delicious in Onstage2 asks: You have a picture of Marilyn Monroe in your video for "It's been awhile".  Are you a fan?

Staind_Live says: Yeah, but that was just kind of a set designer thing. It was just kind of there when we walked in.

Vertigoed in Onstage3 asks: What is the process you usually go through to make your songs? Be specific. Ex: Do you make the lyrics first then the music? Or do you just wake up w/ a tune u heard in your dreams? Thanks!

Staind_Live says: Usually the music is done first whether Mike or I wrote it. The more acoustic is usuallyme. The lyrics are mainly ad libed, I just say stuff and I usually don't know what it is until after.

DishDiva says: You were nominated for the Video Music Awards for Best Rock Video. Congratulations! Does this put any pressure on future creative processes for videos?

Staind_Live says: Na, I don't really pay attention to that stuff. I mean it's cool that we were nominated but it's not like we're going or anything. We'll actually be in Europe. But I don't think we would have gone anyway, it's too long of a flight.

MsNoVoice in Onstage6 asks: With the recent popularity and demanding schedule, do you feel that this has caused a strain in your personal lives and a strain on the band as well? Do you forsee this causing a problem with the band? I would hate to hear of Staind breaking up.

Staind_Live says: I can only speak for myself (Aaron) it causes a strain. I didn't get into that to be a "rockstar" I got into this because I love music and my lyrics are my only way to express that side of myself. I have a hard time getting it out any other way. But all

Staind_Live says: the pressures and the focus that's put upon me is extremely uncomfortable for me. I'm a private person and being on tour and being on the cover of "Rolling Stone" is such the complete opposite of what I'm used to having. As far as the future, I have no

Staind_Live says: idea.

Crusher7558 in Onstage5 asks: What is you favorite song to play, and listen to?

Staind_Live says: You know, I really can't put a label as far as a favorite. They're all a piece of me.

DaggerWolff in Onstage3 asks: Thank you for putting our angst into words.

Staind_Live says: Thank you for listening.

DishDiva says: Is this coming from a part of you?

Staind_Live says: Yeah, definitely. It's all part of me.

masawemps in Onstage1 asks: What is the next single you are going to release?

Staind_Live says: "Fade."

becoming1134 in Onstage1 asks: What's one of the weirdest things you've seen backstage at one of your shows?

Staind_Live says: There's nothing. Backstage at our shows there's nothing. It's just the four of us hanging out and we're just chillin out. There's no after party, there's no craziness going on. There's been things that other bands have done that had nothing to do with me.

Staind_Live says: I tend to be more reclusive. I tend to stay away from everything or stay on the back of the bus.

georgiachic_1 in Onstage3 asks: What do you guys do in your free time?

Staind_Live says: I fish a lot, I golf a lot, and if I'm not doing one of those two things, I'm usually at hom.

Staind_Live says: home.

DishDiva says: How's your game?

Staind_Live says: Decent. I've broken 100, but I haven't been playing very long. I've only played like 13 times. So I guess I'm doing pretty good for only playing a couple of months.

DishDiva says: Do you get to play in any of the cities you tour?

Staind_Live says: Yeah! That's how I started because it's easy to roll into the nicest golf course and play.

deathdefir251 in Onstage3 asks: What do you guys think of Napster?

Staind_Live says: Napster is a great thing for bands that are unsigned but it's not a good thing for bands that are trying to meet contractual obligations and make a little something. The system isn't set up in our favor and everyone gets money before you and Napster just

Staind_Live says: takes what little money you do get right out of your hand.

S_V_A in Onstage6 asks: Why did you choose to do a chat?

Staind_Live says: It's one of the ways I can talk to the kids that is a little less stressful for me.

DishDiva says: Are you a fan of the Internet?

Staind_Live says: No. Actually I don't have a computer, I've probably been on the internet probably ten times and six of those times I popped in on our chat room and tried to tell them it was me but no one believed me. (laughs)

DishDiva says: Well, they believe you now!

Staind_Live says: No, it definitely won't be in my house. It's kind of like total anarchy on the web. Anyone can say whatever they want to on the web, true or not. And I don't want to hear it and I don't want my loved ones to hear it, just for those people to fix their

DishDiva says: Well, Aaron, we're glad you're here.

Staind_Live says: boredom. Some people ask for it, but I don't think I have, I just want to play my music.

Insane_Klown1234 in Onstage4 asks: Which bands have influenced you the most in your career?

Staind_Live says: There's so many different influences that range from James Taylor, Crosby, Stills and Nash, a lot that some of the kids reading this right now haven't ever heard of. Everything from Deftones, Tool, all that stuff that I like.

StaindJunkie in Onstage2 asks: When you showed Fred Durst your cd Tormented how did he react?

Staind_Live says: He freaked out. He immediately thought we were devil worshipers and tried to have us thrown off the show we were doing. It didn't work and he stood side stage wanting to say "I told you so" to someone. But it worked out in our favor because he had to sit

Staind_Live says: side stage and listen to us and he liked us.

staindoutkast in Onstage1 asks: Aaron, in Rolling Stone, you and your wife talked about parenthood. Are you planning on having children soon, or in the distant future?

Staind_Live says: No, definitely nothing soon, but I do want it in the future. I never wanted that until I met my wife and wanted her to be the mother of my kids. There's nothing in the near future though, I don't want to be an absentee father, I want to see it all.

BritniStaind in Onstage2 asks: Aaron, I understand that the lady in the "It's been awhile" video is your wife.  Is that true?

Staind_Live says: Yeah.

Staind_Live says: My wife certainly doesn't want any part of this business either. She doesn't want any of the extra attention. It absolutely embarrasses the s*** out of her when kids ask her for her autograph. (laughs)

Guest_keysee in Onstage2 asks: What was your inspiration for the song "Waste"?

Staind_Live says: "Waste" was inspired by the story, it's a true story about a mom that came up to me in Detroit and wanted to talk to me about her son that had killed himself and was looking for answers. So I wrote down what I was feeling in a song and got pissed off at

Staind_Live says: the end. It takes so much strength to make it through whatever you're going through then to end it all and it doesn't solve anything, it just hurts the people around you.

AmpEater in Onstage4 asks: Is singing about personal pain as cathartic as you make it seem?

Staind_Live says: It really does help me. It gives me a way of getting all of that out. So if that's what cathartic means (laughs) I don't mean to show my lack of skills in English.

huladoll_mil in Onstage3 asks: What has inspired the change in your music over the years?

Staind_Live says: I guess just kind of getting older and starting to see things different, being in a different place in my life when I write the songs. The titles of the records fit into it all too. During "Tormented" that was a hard time for me. "Disfunction" was when I

Staind_Live says: hit bottom of my little world and now "Break the Cycle" is where I'm trying to do something about it. It's been a natural progresson with me getting older and seeing things differently.

Staind_Live says: Wow, that was so many shows ago.

diva_2007 in Onstage2 asks: What was it like when yall  got on stage for the first time?

Staind_Live says: I can't remember.

Staind_Live says: I'm sure it was very exciting. There's been so many things that have happened since then that were so much huger. I haven't stopped for the last three years and it's all just a big blur.

DishDiva says: You have a show tonight. Is it still exciting?

Staind_Live says: I'm looking forward to getting out on stage tonight and making everything I've done worthwhile.

SoulDesires in Onstage10 asks: Who's made the biggest influence in your life?

Staind_Live says: My wife.

DishDiva says: Good answer!

RoxyGirl5333 in Onstage6 asks: Are you affected in any way by the fans who have issues similar to ones that you experienced growing up

Staind_Live says: I'm effected where as it makes me, it's kind of rewarding for me without setting out and trying to it seems I'm helping kids through what they're going through. That really wasn't a goal or planned, it just happened. I'm being honest in how I feel and it

Staind_Live says: seems like a lot of people are getting it and relating.

DishDiva says: Aaron, congratulations on your #1 CD, "Break the Cycle." Thanks for stopping by to talk with your fans about your new CD, "Break the Cycle."

Staind_Live says: Thank you! I hope you realize that just because I tend to hide from you sometimes, you don't mean any less to me. You are everything to me, you're the reason we're here. I just have a hard time dealing with the adoration. It's not something I've delt with

Staind_Live says: in my life.

DishDiva says: From all of your fans here on MSN, have a great show.
